Water Flashcards
Why is water a polar molecule ?
It has differently charged regions
What does dipolar mean ?
It has two charged regions
Why is water such a strong substance ?
The slightly negative charge on the oxygen atom attracts to the slightly positive charge on the hydrogen atom on another molecule . Because there are so many bonds it is a lot stronger
How does water help with transport in plants ?
Plants use water to uptake minerals and vitamins
How does water help with transport in animals ?
Needed in transport fluids lie cytoplasm , blood, plasma and tissue fluid
How does water help with chemical reactions ?
Water is used as a solvent to create solutions . Enzyme reactions of photosynthesis ,respiration and excretion happen in solution .
How does water help with temperature control ?
Water needs a lot of energy to heat up so it means slight changes in temperature within the body do not affect it too much
How does water help with support ?
Water can become turgid so provide support for plants . aquatic animals use it for buoyancy . Water filled tissues contribute to skeletal support in animals like worms .
