Do Cooling Towers have to be registered with the local Council?
Yes, all cooling towers must be registered with the Local Authority in which they are present. This is required by the Notification of Cooling Tower and Evaporative Condensers Regulations 1992.
What does a Water Risk Assessment tell us?
It lists all the water equipment installed on a system and identifies the risk they present.
It identifies any remedial works required to reduce the risks or repair the systems.
It identifies the maintenance actions and frequencies required to be completed to minimise the risk from the system.
Why do little used outlet need to be flushed regularly?
Little used and stagnant parts of water systems present a significant risk from bacteria thriving in water systems. There should be a schedule of little used outlets for every system and a regime of flushing them. Records of this activity should be kept.
What is the acceptable temperature of cold water drawn from a tap after 2 minutes of flushing?
Less than 20 C after 2 minutes flushing.
What is the acceptable temperature of water drawn from a hot tap after 1 minute flushing?
At least 50C after 1 minute of flushing.
At what frequency should the temperature of Sentinel Taps be checked and recorded?
Monthly as recommended by Appendix 3 of ACoP L8.
What are the critical temperatures of flow and return water to calorifiers?
Flow temperature must be at least 69C and Return temperature at least 50C
How often should the temperature of incoming water to a building be checked and recorded?
Twice a year. once in the summer, once in the winter.
