water- Flashcards
what is water
a major component of cells.
What does water consists of
2 hydrogen atoms and a oxygen atom
why is water a dipolar molecule
because of the slight negative oxygen atom and the slightly positive atom it creates a positive pole and a negative pole making it a dipolar molecule.
what is the overall charge like in a water molecule
there is a uneven distribute of charges due to the negative oxygen and positive hydrogen hydrogen bonds forms between them.
what are the properties of water
high specific heat capacity, cohesion and surface tension, high latent heat of vapourisation
what is high specific heat capacity
water molecules stick together by hydrogen bond which mean that it requires lots of energy to break which makes water have a high heat capacity- very large range of tempreture= excellent medium for life on earth.
