Water Flashcards
What are the 5 properties of water?
- Colorless – has no color
- Odorless – has no odor or scent
- Tasteless – has no flavor
- Boiling point – 100 ̊C
- Melting/Freezing point – 0 ̊C
What happens to water when heat is added or removed from it?
It changes states.
What re the three states water exists in?
1.Solids
2.Liquids
3.Gases
What name is given to water in each of these states?
The names given to water at each state of matter?
1.Ice
2.‘Water’
3.Steam/Water Vapor
What are the 6 aspects of the water cycle?
1) transpiration
2) condensation
3) precipitation
4) runoff
5) collection
6) evaporation
(review diagram in notes)
What is transpiration?
the movement of water from leaves of plants into the atmosphere.
What is condensation?
the formation of clouds from the clumping together of water vapor in the atmosphere.
What is precipitation?
the falling of water from clouds as rain, snow or hail.
What is runoff?
this when water runs off mountains or hills as a result of heavy rainfall or the melting of snow.
What is collection?
when water accumulates as oceans lakes or ponds as a result of runoff.
What is evaporation?
the movement of water from bodies of water to gas in the atmosphere.
What is water conservation?
the preservation, control and development of water resources, both surface and groundwater, and prevention of pollution
What are the four uses of water based on its properties?
1.Recreation - Swimming,sea, bathing, etc.
2.Transport
3.As a Solvent (dissolving ability) - cleaning
4.Habitat – HOMES SUCH AS PONDS, LAKES, RIVERS AND OCEANS FOR ORGANISMS
