Metals Flashcards
What are the 6 characteristics of metals?
- Sonorous
- Lustrous
- Ductile
- Malleable
- Good conductor of heat
- Good conductor of electricity
What does sonorous mean?
makes a sound when struck
What does Lustrous mean?
shines when polished
What does Ductile mean?
can be stretched into wire
What does malleable mean?
can be beaten into shape
What are the 6 characteristics of non-metals?
- Dull in appearance
- Light in weight
- Soft
- Brittle
- Poor conductor of heat
- Poor conductor of electricity
What is an alloy?
A metallic solid of two (2) or more elements which has enhanced (stronger or more durable) properties in comparison to the individual components.
What is an element?
A substance that cannot be broken down to any smaller by a chemical reaction.
What are three examples of alloys?
Brass – Copper + Zinc
Bronze – Copper + Tin
Steel – Iron + Carbon
What is rusting?
It is the oxidation of iron into iron oxide.
How do you know when rusting occurs?
We know rusting occurs when the iron which is gray in color turns brown.
What is the word equation for rusting?
Iron + oxygen gas → Iron oxide (rust)
What are the conditions required for rusting to occur?
Iron must be present, as well as oxygen gas and water (moisture).
What are two methods used to avoid rusting?
Painting and oiling
