Q

What is the first aid procedure for a minor burn?

A

Soak the burn in cool (not cold) water for at least 10 – 20 minutes. The cool water helps reduce swelling by pulling heat away from the burned skin. Treat the burn with a skin care product that protects and heals skin, such as aloe vera cream or an antibiotic ointment. You can wrap a dry gauze bandage loosely around the burn.

Q

What is the first aid procedure for a chemical splash in the eye?

A

Flush your eye with water only, preferably with clean, lukewarm tap water for at least 20 minutes. Wash your hands with soap and water. Thoroughly rinse your hands to be sure none of the chemical or soap is left on them. Don’t rub the eye — this may cause further damage. Seek emergency medical assistance and take the chemical container or the name of the chemical with you.

Q

What is the first aid procedure for the ingestion of a household cleaner?

A

Remove anything remaining in the person’s mouth. If the suspected poison is a household cleaner or other chemical, read the container’s label and follow instructions for accidental poisoning. If the person vomits, turn his or her head to the side to prevent choking. Begin CPR if the person shows no signs of life, such as moving, breathing or coughing. Call for medical assistance

Q

What is the first aid procedure for a cut with a sharp tool?

A

Stop the Bleeding by applying direct pressure on the area. Clean and protect the area by washing with warm water and a gentle soap. Apply an antibiotic ointment to reduce the chance of infection. Put a sterile bandage on the area. In some people, antibiotic ointments may cause a rash. If this happens, stop using the ointment and seek medical attention.
