water Flashcards
1
Q
what is hydrogen bonding
A
water is polar
oxygen atrracts positive hydrogen of another water molecule
2
Q
what are the properties of water and their importance in biology
A
- high specific heat capacity : polar so many H bonds which allow water to absorb large amounts of heat before its temp changes - good habitat for aquatic organisms as temp more stable, maintains constant body temp as temp affects enzyme activity
- high latent heat of evaporation: polar so many H bonds can absorb lots of energy before breaking- cooling mevhanism, maintains constant body temp
- cohesive: polar so many H bonds that stick together - column of water doesnt break in transpiration in xylem, produces surface tension
- solvent: polar so can dissolve ionic componds - can dissolve other substances, acts as a medium for metabolic reactions, acts as transport mevhanism
- metabolite: reactive- condensation and hydrolysis reactions
