Q

the movement of water molecules from a solution with a high concentration of water molecules to a solution with a lower concentration of water molecules, through a cell’s partially permeable membrane.
- this is why we can’t drink salt water bc it might cause dehydration as it has low water concentration, while our cells have high water concentration

A

osmosis

Q

greywater

A

chemically polluted water
- product water of domestic activities: bathing, laundry, and dishwashing
- polluted water due to pesticides in agriculture and nutrients from fertilizers- contains soap, fat particles, and even hair

Q

can greywater be recycled and reused

A

yes, not for drinking, but for irrigation. Since it was not in contact with human waste, it can be used for watering crops and other plants and is safely reabsorbed into the ground if the chemical content is not too high. however, it is highly advised that what goes down the drain is heavily regulated

Q

effects of greywater

A

(in order)

  • leaching - water dissolve chemicals (greywater)
  • eutrophication - water environment change due to high amounts of nutrients/chemicals
  • algal bloom - algae will start to grow on the surface due to the nutrients present in the water
  • oxygen deprivation - algae will block sunlight and oxygen to get in the water; bacteria will grow
  • fish kill - aquatic organisms will start to die

domestic use of water

A

household and personal use

17
Q

how many gallons of water does a person consume in 24 hours

A

120 gallons

18
Q

what water does the domestic sector use and produce

A

uses blue water and produces greywater and black water

19
Q

black water

A

contaminated with fecal water

20
Q

“We will not runout of water on earth because water is infinite due to water cycle” is this true?

A

no, our water consumption is faster than the time it takes for potable water to be produced by the water cycle. Not all water returns as usable, since pollution and some turn into black and greywater.
