Q

What are 6 properties that make water important for organisms

A
  1. Cohesion creates surface tension that supports small organisms living on waters surface (pond skaters) 2. Used as a metabolite in condensation/ hydrolysis 3. Used as a solvent so metabolic reactions can occur/ allow transport of substances 4. High specific heat capacity so buffers change in temp, creating stable environment for fish (as takes energy to break H binds and increase temp) 5. Requires lots of energy to break H bonds and evaporate water so sweating is effective method of cooling 6. Polar so has H bonds as O- and H+(weak but strong) wakes water cohesion used to pull water up xylem in continuous column
