Basics Flashcards
Are polar molecules hydrophobic or hydrophyllic
Hydrophyllic
Examples of monosaccharides
Glucose, fructose, galactose
Examples of polysaccharides
A carbohydrate such as Starch, cellulose
What are hydrogen bonds
When electrons in molecule are not evenly distributed so is a polar molecule. Negative region of one molecule is attracted to the positive region of another- each bond is weak but strong in numbers
How many molecules does a triglyceride have
4 (glycerol + 3 fatty acids)
Polymers of amino acids
Peptides, polypeptides and proteins
What is the reaction that joins monomers
Condensation (a chemical bond is made and water is produced and taken out)
What is hydrolysis
The addition of water breaks a chemical bond and polymers onto monomers
Why do polar molecules dissolve in water
Polar molecules form hydrogen bonds with water
What are some examples of monomers
Monosaccharides (the single monomer that joins to make carbohydrates), amino acids join to make a polypeptide and then a protein and nucleotides which join to form polynucleotides
What is the formula for glucose
C6H12O6
Monomer definition
Smaller repeating subunits from which larger molecules can be made
