waste management Flashcards
why is the population rising?
modern medicine and farming which have reduced the number of people dying
what does a growth in population and an increase in the standard of living mean?
-raw materials are rapidly being used up
-more materials are being used
-more waste is produced
-more pollution
-pressure on the environment
why are we producing more waste?
there is an increase in population and standard of living is increasing
what is the issue with pollution?
it can cause harmful pollution which kills plants and animals, reducing biodiversity
what are the three types of pollution?
land, air, water
air pollution definition
the contamination of earth’s atmosphere
land pollution definition
the contamination of earth’s soil
water pollution definition
the contamination of oceans, lakes and rivers
how is air pollution caused?
gas dust, fumes, volcanic eruptions and burning fuels
how is land pollution caused?
waste/landfill and toxic chemicals left on ground
how is water pollution caused?
chemicals used in land washed into rivers, industrial sewage and chemicals
give 3 examples of water pollution
untreated sewage, toxic chemicals, fertiliser
give 3 examples of land pollution
pesticides and herbicides, toxic chemicals, nuclear/household waste
give 2 examples of air pollution
sulfur dioxide, smoke
how does sulfur dioxide cause harm?
it dissolves into acid rain which damages plants and aquatic animals
