using quadrats Flashcards
1
Q
method
A
- place the quadrat randomly on the ground within the first sample area
- count all the organisms within the quadrat
- repeat as many times as possible within the first sample area
- work out the mean number or organisms per quadrat within the first sample area
- repeat steps 1-4 in the second sample area
- compare the two means
2
Q
why would you randomly throw the quadrat on the ground?
A
to avoid any biasness you might have and obtain accurate results
3
Q
random sampling
A
a sampling technique in which each sample has the same probability of being chosen
4
Q
total population
A
total area/area sampled x no. organisms
5
Q
how can you make the practical more accurate?
A
repeat more times, increase number of quadrat throws to cover a greater percentage of area
