Q

What is Jay’s Treaty?

A

John Jay was sent to London to negotiate a treaty. The British agreed to evacuate their forts, but they could continue to trade furs with the Native Americans in the U.S. They also agreed to grant rights to U.S. ships in the Caribbean. This increased domestic tensions. The treaty is seen as pro-British. Americans see Jay as a sellout. Washington’s support of Jay will turn people against him too.
