1st Amendment
- Freedom of Speech
- Freedom of Religion
- Freedom of Press
- Right to Peacefully Assemble (protest)
- Right to petition the government
2ed Amendment
The Right to Bare Arms (Guns)
3rd Amendment
Don’t have to house (or feed) soldiers
4th Amendment
Need a specific warrant to enter/search people
5th Amendment
- Don’t have to admit guilt, right to remain silent (“I plead the 5th”)
- Can’t be tried for the same crime twice.
- Can’t be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law.
- Eminent domain, property can’t be taken without being composition ($)
- The right to a Jury
6th Amendment
- Right to a speedy and public trial
- Right to be told what you’re accused of.
- Right to bring witnesses to your defense.
- The right to question the witnesses against you.
- Right to a lawyer.
7th Amendment
You have the right to a trial by Jury in a civil case. (only $20+)
8th Amendment
- No excessive bails or fines
2. No cruel or unusual punishment
9th Amendment
People have other rights not listed in the bill of rights
10th Amendment
Any power not given to the national government is given to the states
How does the amendment process illustrate federalism?
The national government proposes the amendment and the states ratify it.
Why did the Anti-Federalists want the Bill of Rights?
Fear that the National government would get too powerful and abuse the people’s rights.
