Warning Systems Flashcards
Which switch is used to inhibit the “TOO LOW FLAPS” GPWS alert?
The FLAP INHIBIT switch
When are radio altimeter callouts provided on approach?
“FIVE HUNDRED”
-descending below 500’ RA if:
—a non ILS/GLS is used, or
—valid loc freq used and
—-not within +/- 2 dots loc or gs
—-backcourse detected
“MINIMUMS, MINIMUMS”
-at DA/MDA
-based radio alt when MINS selector set to RADIO
-based on barometric alt when MINS selector set to BARO
-based on captains minimums selector
How is an actual wind shear encounter annunciated to the flight crew by the GPWS system?
WINDSHEAR warning (red) on the attitude indicators and
aural voice alerts.
-two tone siren followed by “WINDSHEAR WINDSHEAR WINDSHEAR”
*alerting active
-takeoff rotation to 1500 AGL
-approach 1500-10’ AGL
-missed approach to 1500 AGL
What does a red terrain elevation on the terrain elevation display indicate?
Dotted Red: terrain >2000’ above aircraft
Dotted Amber: 500’ (250’ gear down) below to 2000’ above
Dotted Green: 2000’ below to 500’ (250’ gear down) below
Dotted Magenta: no terrain data available
Solid Red or Amber: look ahead caution or warning active
Black:no significant terrain or obstacle
*when all terrain is >2000’ below, only highest peaks shown.
*elevation display notes highest and lowest terrain altitude and numbers are color coded to match logic above
Is radar turbulence detection capable of detecting clear air turbulence?
No
Requires the presence of at least light precip to measure precip velocities
What does pushing WX+T on the radar control panel provide?
Weather Plus Threats
Turbulence is displayed out to 40 nm for all selected ranges.
Must be in AUTO mode to display core, path threat assessment, and level 2 turbulence and predictive over flight protection
WX+T only provides turbulence within how much range?
40 nm for all selected ranges
How is radar scanning activated?
When either (or both) WXR switch(s) selected on the EFIS control panel
-power applied to the weather transmitter
-displays radar returns on respective ND
*if in TEST
-power applied to radar transmitter for less than 1 sec, then muted
How is the Predictive Windshear System activated?
Selecting WXR on the EFIS control panel
-radar sweeps alternate between windshear and WX returns
Advancing either thrust lever beyond 53 degrees
-all radar antenna sweeps are for windshear
-alerting not available for approx 12 sec
Does the weather radar provide alerting for all types of windshear?
No
The weather radar detects microbursts and other windshears with similar characteristics. Does not provide alerting for all types of windshear.
How far does the predictive windshear area extend?
3 nm
Caution:
-outside warning range, and
- within 30 degrees heading (SH wrong)
- >.5 nm and <3nm ahead
- takeoff/approach, cautions inhibited above 80 kts and below 400’ AGL
Warning:
-takeoff: <.25 nm either side of aircraft heading and >.5 nm and <3 nm ahead
-landing: same but >.5 nm and <1.5 nm ahead
-takeoff/approach warnings inhibited above 100kts and less than 50 ft RA, don’t remove existing PWS alerts
-turned on below 2300’ RA
-Below 2300’ RA, radar sweeps reduce from 180 degrees to 120 degrees with PWS enabled
-alerting enabled below 1200’ RA
-Warnings
—WINSHEAR AHEAD
—GO AROUND, WINDSHEAR AHEAD
—ND and Attitude indicator
-Caution
—MONITOR RADAR DISPLAY
—ND only
When is predictive windshear alerting available on the ground after the radar starts scanning?
12 seconds
Activated by thrust levers advanced beyond 53 degrees or WXR switch on EFIS control panel
What does an aural “MONITOR RADAR DISPLAY” alert indicate?
A PWS Caution
-WINDSHEAR (amber) message on ND
-windshear (red) symbol on ND, and
-aural “monitor radar display”
-outside the warning region (not directly ahead of aircraft
- PWS available on expanded MAP, center MAP, expanded VOR, expanded APP only
When is the Runway Awareness Advisory System (RAAS) enabled?
Automatically. During taxi and on approach
Function of the EGPWS
Taxi alerts:
-aural and visual message
-depends on ground speed with respect to runway edge
-inhibited above 40 kts
-above 40kts, “on taxiway, on taxiway” alert
Approach: ex APP 16L
-visual message only
- 300-750 AFE within 3 nm of runway and 200’ of Rwy centerline
Alerts:
Approaching runway, taxi
On runway, air or ground
Distance remaining on landing and RTO
Takeoff flap
Taxiway takeoff
Extended runway hold after 3 min
Insufficient runway length, T/O, <4500’
Altimeter monitor, transition altitude
What are the TCAS traffic advisory symbols?
Red solid square: RA (resolution advisory)
Amber solid circle: TA (traffic advisory)
White solid diamond: proximate traffic
White hollow diamond: other traffic
