What are the warning signs of dysphagia?
A
1) decreased alertness of cognitive function:
Due to sedation/medication in Parkinson’s
Due to fatigue in stroke
2) change in approach to food:
Laborious chewing, repetitive swallowing
3) Evidence of impaired oropharygeal dysfunction:
Dysarthria
Wet, hoarse voice
Dysfunction of facial musculature
Drooling, oral spillage, pooling and pocketing of food
Coughing and choking/ throat clearing
Infrequent swallow
HISTORY OF CHEST INFECTIONS
