What are the signs of an oral stage dysphagia?
Poor/disorganised oral manipulation and movement of bolus - reduced lip, tongue, or palate motor movement
Food pocketing - collecting in cheeks and lateral sulcus, anterior sulcus, beneath tongue anteriorly or laterally
Anterior loss - food falling from mouth, inadequate labial seal
Due to:
Reduced strength of lip seal
Impaired tongue movement
What questions can be asked at the oral stage?
Does saliva dribble from the mouth?
Does the patient have difficulty keeping food and drink in the mouth?
Is it hard to take food off a spoon or drink from a cup?
Is chewing difficult?
Is food left in the mouth after swallowing?
Is food left in the cheeks or stuck to the roof of the mouth?
Is a drink needed to wash down mouthfuls?
Is more than one swallow needed?
Does liquid come back through the mouth when swallowed?
