Warfarin Flashcards
Class
Oral anticoagulant
Actions
Inhibits blood
coagulation
Mechanism of action
Inhibits reduction of vitamin K and thus prevents y-carboxylation of the glutamate residues in factors 2, 7, 9 and 10.
Clinical use
Treat deep vein thrombosis Pulmonary embolism Prevent embolization in atrial fibrillation
Adverse effects
Bleeding. Treated by giving natural vitamin K or fresh plasma/coagulation factor concentrates
What is replacing Warfin
non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants.
What is Warfrin
: An anticoagulant (A vitamin K antagonist)
What do i use warfarin to treat
the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disease including venous thrombosis, thromboembolism, and pulmonary embolism as well as for the prevention of ischemic stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).
what happens if you give warfarin to preggers women
foetal bleeding, spontaneous abortion, and neonatal death
why if warfarin bad for preggers women
because it can cross the placental barriers
action of warfarin
inhibits vitamin K reductase, reducing levels of the reduced form of vitamin K. lowering the production of coagulation factors 2 7 9 and 10. as well as anticoagilant proteins C and S
what does vit K do
. As vitamin K is required for the production of coagulation factors II, VII, IX, and X and anticoagulant proteins C and S
depression of vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors 2 7 and 10 result in what
decreased prothrombin levels , decreased thrombin generation and reduced ability to form a clot.
