War Photographer Flashcards
“Spools of suffering”.
A spool is the cylinder on which photographing film is coiled. This photographer’s photos, and therefore his photographic films, are filled with images of the pain caused by war.
“In his darkroom he is finally alone”.
The darkroom is the place where photographs are developed. This photographer has returned here to develop photographs after a long trip abroad.
“Belfast. Beirut. Phnom Penh.”
These are all famous war zones.
“He remembers the cries of this man’s wife, how he sought approval without words to do what someone must”.
The man obviously has a right to privacy, but as the photographer doesn’t speak the native language of this country, he is unable to ask his grief-stricken wife’s permission to take the photos or, possibly, the wife is too much in despair to notice the photographer, so he has to take the photo without asking her.
