This is the characters view as a child when travelling down to England from Scotland in a train.
“Our mother singing our fathers name to the turn of the wheels.”
This is the mother calling to the father from the train who is already in England to calm down the kids crying.
“I stared at the eyes of a blind toy, holding its paw.”
This implies that they she is heading into the unknown as she doesn’t know where she is going.
“Eating worms and shouting words you don’t understand.”
This tells the reader that she is upset as she feels isolated with no friends and no one to talk to. This is also tells us that she doesn’t understand anyone because she is from a different country.
“As the miles rushed back to the city”.
This is personification to imply that she wants to go back to her homeland Scotland.
“Home, home”
This is repetition of the word home to show that she misses her homeland Scotland.
“All childhood is an imigration.”
This implies that children change a lot throughout their life such as puberty and this also implies that her life was always changing because of the move.
“Seeing your brother eating a slug”
This refers back to boys eating worms as her brother is also eating horrible insects to try and fit in.
My tongue shedding its skin like a snake
This is a simile to refer to the fact that her accent has changed and the snake refers to the fact that she feels she’s turned her back on scotland.
