What did Sinn Fein promise Ireland
Promise to give Ireland a republic if the people voted for them in the next election (election of 1918)
What did Sinn Fein do when they won the election
They set up the dáil , The parliament of an independent Irish Republic in the mansion house, Dublin
(The British government declared the dáil illegal)
What is the IRA
Sinn Féin’s military wing , They would defend the republic by force of arms
What was the main aim of the IRA
In 1919 the IRAs mission was to the destroyed the RIC
Britain’s response to this they sent a group of former World War I soldiers to Ireland to help fight against the IRA these men were known as the black and tans
Explain Bloody Sunday
-November 21st 1920,
Collins sent his squad to execute 12 British spies
These happened the same day the Black and Tans opened fire into Crome park (14 people killed , Micheal hogan among them one of Croke parks stands named after him)
Explain the truce
-The IRA was successful during the war
-it was clear to Collins and Devalera that the IRA would not be able to defeat The British by force alone
-a truce was called on the 11th of July 1921
Explain the treaty negotiations
-The British didn’t want to give the Irish a fully independent republic
-they offered partial independence for 26 counties the delegation wasn’t happy with this offer they wanted a republic
-Anglo Irish treaty was signed on December 6th (Lloyd George threatened a war if the treaty wasn’t signed)

Summarise the civil war
The irregulars were anti treaty and took over the four courts
The free state army attacked them in June 1922. (Civil war began)
Irregulars had most support from Dublin and Munster
The free state army defeated the irregulars in may 1923 but now before the death of Micheal Collins and Arthur Griffith
How did Collins and Griffith die
Griffith died of a stroke on 12 of august 1922
Collins was shot by anti treaty IRA men in cork 10 days later on 22nd of august
