They were work camps found in Siberia due to cold hard working conditions

1928 to 1932 they focused on the production of electricity, 1933 to 1937 they focused on the production of heavy industry and transportation 1938 to 1941 interrupted by 1941 invasion by Germany they focused on production of arms and ammunition

Harsh working conditions severe punishments, no unemployment, second largest industrial country, large construction projects, growth of urban population

Government took over all farming land to move farmers to factories instead
Effects of collectivisation
Famine millions died, millions killed or sent to gulags, collective farms insufficient
Effects on women’s life
Equal footing in the workplace, higher percentage of women in the workforce than western countries, family life encouraged harder to get a divorce, kindergarten is performed to facilitate women in the workforce plus childcare allowances
