What do the different approaches of exterminator and negotiator mean?
exterminators wanted Indians dead, Negotiators wanted peace.
When was the Fort Laramie treaty and what did it do.
1968 - An agreement between the Indians and Americans where they agreed the Indians could have the black hills.
Where did Custer go in 1874 and why?
Black hills to find suitable location for a fort.
Why were the hills important to the Indians?
It was sacred and where the original spirit came from.
Who raised the largest Indian army?
Sitting Bull.
Which 3 leaders were sent to defeat this army?
General Sheridan- Crook, Gibbon and Terry
What did Custer not take with him which caused him to lose?
The advice of Indian scouts and doesn’t take the extra guns and artillery.
What action did he take which caused him to lose?
Acted alone and didn’t wait as he wanted the glory.
What 2 things did the Indians have/do which caused them to win?
They outnumbered the US and brought everyone together and had determination to win.
What characteristics of Custer caused him to lose?
arrogance
What was the Winter Campaign and Total War that followed the US defeat?
Americans forced Indians to fight in winter as they are at their weakest.
Give 3 ways why the White Americans set about destroying the buffalo.
To stop the Indians from living nomadically , for fun, to kill Indian culture, for the skins, for money and hunting expeditions.
Who were Indian agents?
People who ran reservations.
What problems did Indians face on the reservations?
Could no longer hunt, cant leave reservations, not enough supplies and land is poor.
How did religion and education lead tot heir defeat?
Couldn’t practise dances or talk in their language and Indian children went to American schools.
