What was reconstruction?
Putting north and south together and allowing the south to self-regulate their reconstruction.
What was his approach to the south?
Gave land back to original owners and pardoned them.
How did he help southerners?
Pardon them and pass black codes.
How did he not help black people?
Tried to veto the civil rights act.
What were black codes?
Southern states had laws that segregated black people from white people.

Civil rights act.

Protect black citizens
What was the 14th Amendment?
Civil rights act which means everyone is a citizen regardless of race.
What was Johnson’s and Southern states approach to it?
Johnson opposed it and southern states refused to ratify it.
When was the first and second Reconstruction acts passed and what did they do?
1867- placed the south under military law.
1870- enforced the civil rights act or the southern states would lose their representation in the senate.
What did the 15th Amendment do?
All citizens have the right to vote.

a white supremacy group formed 1865

Restored the US to a unified nation with a loyalty oath. The union now has been re-joined.

Some southerners and the KKK got away with it and they weren’t forced to band segregation so it didn’t happen

had to be a citizen and farm for 5 years.
