WAN technologies Flashcards

1
Q

T1

A

T1 circuits were originally used in telephony networks, with the intent of one voice conversation being carried in a single channel
T1 circuit combines 24 DS0s into a single physical connection to offer 1.544 Mbps of bandwidth

Q

E1

A

E1 circuits contain 32 channels, Only 30 of those 32 channels, however, can transmit data (or voice or video).

Q

T3

A

T3 circuit offers an increased bandwidth capacity.
T3 circuit combines 672 DS0s into a single physical connection, which is called a Digital Signal 3 (DS3).
T3 circuit has a bandwidth capacity of 44.7 Mbps.

Q

SONET(Synchronous Optical Network)

A

fiber-optic WAN technology that delivers voice, data, and video at speeds starting at 51.84Mbps.
Its a Layer 1 technology
It can be used to transport various Layer 2 encapsulation types, such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM)

Q

SDH(Synchronous Digital Hierarchy)

A

fiber-optic multiplexing standard.
used synonymously with SONET used world wide
Not so widley used in America as SONET mostly used worldwide.

Q

DWDM(dense wavelength division multiplexing)

A

high-speed optical network commonly used in MANs.
The main components of a DWDM system include the following: .
Terminal multiplexer .
Line repeaters .
Terminal demultiplexer

uses as many as 32 light wavelengths on a single fiber, where each wavelength can support as many as 160 simultaneous transmissions

Q

ISDN(Integrated Services Digital Network)

A

alternative to the slower modem WAN connections

ISDN enables the transmission of voice and data over the same physical connection.

Q

DSL(digital subscriber line)

A

high-speed data transmission over existing telephone wiring
group of technologies… has data rates and distance limitations.(unequal upstream and downstream speed)
A DSL filter works by minimizing this interference, making for a faster and cleaner DSL connection.
Symmetric DSL (SDSL):upstream and downstream speeds.
Very High Bit-Rate DSL (VDSL): boasts a much higher bandwidth capacity than ADSL or SDSL

A

fourth generation in a long series of products offering similar services.(4G) Upload 50Mbit/s Downloads100Mbit/s

17
Q

HSPA+(High-Speed Packet Access )

A

a technology offering wireless broadband service.

18
Q

Fibre

A

is well suited for high-speed data WAN communication

Eliminates near-end crosstalk, EMI, and signal tampering.33

19
Q

Dialup

A

Using the PSTN(Public Switched Telephone Network) to establish WAN connections.
it’s difficult to share large files or videoconferencing because it is slow

20
Q

PON(passive optical network)

A

Use fiber cable-This is made possible via unpowered (that is, passive) optical splitters.

21
Q

ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode)

A

a Layer 2 WAN technology that operates using the concept of PVCs and SVCs

  • packet-switching technology
  • is a circuit-based network technology; uses a virtual circuit to connect two networked devices.
22
Q

WAN Tech Properties

A
  • Circuit Switch: dynamically brings up a dedicated communication link between two parties
  • Packet Switch:messages are broken into smaller pieces called packets.(Each packet is assigned source, destination, and intermediate node addresses.)

Datagram packet switching: datagram
packet switching are independently sent, meaning that they can take different paths through the network to reach their intended destination.

Virtual-circuit packet switching: A logical connection is established between the source and the destination device.
The logical communication path between the two devices can remain active for as long as the two devices are available or can be used to send packets once. After the sending process has completed, the line can be closed
