W6 - CV Function & Growth Flashcards
Define Ejection fraction
Fraction of EDV that is the SV.
Ejection Fraction at rest
~60-70%
SV
Vol of blood expelled by the heart per beat
mL
How is SV calculated
Preload-Afterload
EDV - ESV
What does SV represent
Difference between the vol of blood in the ventricles before contraction + that remaining after contraction.
When is SV greater and by how much?
25% greater in the supine than seated position
Why is SV greater in a certain position above the other?
Consequence of venous return in the seated position.
Due to blood pooling in the lower extremities due to the effects of gravity.
- Direct comparison should only be made between data collected in similar body positions.
Define preload
Vol of blood in the ventricles before contraction (EDV)
Define after load
Vol of blood left in ventricles after contraction. (ESV)
What is Resting CO closely related to?
O2 uptake
What is critical for determining SV?
Venous return
Due to heart only being able to pump out the vol of blood it receives from the systemic circulation.
What is the most commonly used method to remove body size, cardiac index and SV index?
Indexing against body surface area
What determines HR?
Adrenaline
SNS
Parasympathetic NS
Why does resting SV increase with age?
Due to increase in body size, not contractile function.
What does absolute SV increase with?
Body size
