W5: stroke Flashcards
when does stroke happen?
Stroke happens when there is ischemia (inadequate blood flow to an area)
ischemia occurs in parts of the brain –> death of brain cells
===> loss of Movement, sensation (cảm giác), or emotions
what happen if the blood is interrupt or stop?
Neurologic communication system is altered in 30 seconds
Overall body cell communication stops in 2 minutes
Cell death occurs in 5 minutes
what is a major cause of stroke?
Vascular disease (atherosclerosis) is a major cause of stroke
- > Can lead to thrombus formation (clot : cục máu đông))
- > Broken off pieces of clots flow through the circulatory system
what is important thing if we recognize the stroke?
- The patient could have less brain damage If adequate blood flow can be restored early (<3 hours)
- get the patient to hospital quickly
- Anticoagulants (blood thinners) (chất làm loãng máu)
Causes of Strokes
- 85 % Ischemia (decrease blood supply) due to:
- Thrombus
Blood Clot
Formed Due To Hypertension, Cholesterol, DIABETES - Emboli
Particles of the blood clot lodge in a small blood vessel causing stoppage of blood flow - 15% Other type: hemorrhage (xuất huyết)
-Direct blood into brain tissue caused by rupture (=break) of blood vessels
-Due to hypertension, aneurysm (phình động mạch)
how long If the patient survives then death from stroke is reduced
the first 72 hours
what should we do when the stroke happens?
F.A.ST. (Face, Arms, Speech, Time)
face : is it drooping?
can you raise your arms?
is speech slurred or jumbled (lôn xôn)?
to call 9-1-1 right away.
risk factors of stroke?
age gender race heredity (di truyền) Diabetes vascular disease alcohol consumption High Cholesterol Vascular Conditions (cool hand, cool feet) hypertention obesity smoking physical inactivity sickle cell disease Oral Contraceptive Use (thuốc tránh thai)
3 types of stroke’s effects on communication ability?
- Aphasia: UNABLE to speak and understand
- Dysphasia: DIFFICULT to speak and understand
- Dysarthria: difficult to move muscle when speak –> pronoun unclearly.
if the patient have weaker aim, what should we do when dressing?
Always dress weaker arm first
with the client who have stroke, how often to go to toilet
every 2 hours
