Basic Guidelines for Assisting with ADL’s
Gain their trust Understand what their routine is Talk to them as an adult Keep instructions simple/use cues Keep them as independent as possible Maintain their dignity and self esteem Organize your work around them Save them from embarrassment (ko tự nhiên) Be alert for signs of anxiety, confusion, and discomfort Keep record of likes and dislikes Continuity of care Give encouragement and support Use a gentle approach to care

Bathing for Dementia patients
- shower 1 or 2 per week
- Often dislike bathing because of afraid
- Types of baths: tub (bồn), shower, bed, sponge at sink
- Keep person warm
- Right length of time,
- Water right temperature,
- don’t’ use perfumed soaps
skin care for Dementia patients
Skin is delicate, thin, and easily tears skin breakdown Massage skin when applying creams Attention to finger nails Change position often throughout day and night if they can’t do it themselves
Foot Care for Dementia patients
Check regularly
Soak feet (ngâm chân) – basin of warm water
Cut and clean nails/
note ingrown toenails –> see agency policy
Massage
Cream, lotion if skin intact
Grooming for Dementia patients
Encourage to be independent Follow routines Give clear instructions Consider likes, dislikes, privacy, lighting, safety Do not rush (move quickly) the person Give gentle praise (ca ngợi) Men: shaving
Oral Care for Dementia patients
Independence with assistance as needed/safety considerations
Give cues
Oral care and teeth brushing at least twice per day
Care to tongue and roof of mouth

Limit choices Lay out clothes in order Hand outfits on one hanger Ensure clothing is clean Choose easy to wear Use pictures on drawers and closet Tend to have favorite pieces of clothing
Eating for Dementia patients
Know the persons rituals (nghi thức) for eating
Consider the setting
Consider safety issues – choking
Bib (“clothing protector”) and pureed food may seem degrading to person and family
