What is Philosophy of Care?
Philosophy of Care is principles, assumptions, or beliefs as to how patient care should be delivered for all individuals who require care (not just dementia pts.)
value of philosophy of care?
Allows people (staff, patients and family) to move in the same direction
Improves the quality of life for people with dementia
Allows us to appreciate the uniqueness and individuality of each person
Philosophical Principles of Patient Centered Care
The better we know the person behind the illness —> treat them as an individual
so: Person is at the focus of care Belief in the value of each person Recognize the uniqueness of each person Maintain quality of life
Various Models of Care Exist
Medical: Focuses on diagnosis and cure
Social: Focuses on a familiar lifestyle – independence
Health Promotion: Responsibility is on the client for wellness
Excess Disability: Focus on losses in skills and communication
Person Centred Care: The person deserves (xứng đáng) understanding, dignity, and respect and compensation for limitations.
Characteristics of Person Centered Care
Behaviors are a desire to communicate
We must maintain and uphold the value of the person
Promote positive health
All action is meaningful
—> the PERSON first

Identify your commitment: Know the disease process Know types of supports for families Be willing to provide needed services Be a good communicator
