W2 Water Balance & Hydration Flashcards
Whats Intra-cellular Volume?
All fluids outside of the cells
What’s Interstitial Fluid Volume?
Located in spaces between tissue cells
What’s Plasma Volume?
Liquid portion of blood
What is the name called when water moves between different compartments?
Osmosis - is the net movement of solvent molecules through a partially permeable membrane from a region of low solute concentration to a region of high solute concentration
What’s a solvent?
A substance that dissolves a solute E.g. H2O
What’s a solute?
A substance dissolved in a solvent E.g. Glucose & Electrolytes
What’s the definition of Osmolality?
The number of osmoles (Osmol) of solute per Kg of solution
What’s the definition of Osmolarity?
The number of osmoles (Osmol) of solute in a litre of solution
What does Euhydration mean?
The state of normal body water levels
What’s Isotonic Osmotic Equilibrium?
- The osmolarity of the intracellular & extracellular fluids are the same = no movement of water.
- So there is a balance between the inside & outside of the cell
What does Hypohydration mean?
The state of reduced body water level.
E.g. this is used in food presentation because high sugar or high salts is in them
What does Hyperhydration mean?
The state of elevated body water level.
E.g. Wrinkled fingers after being in the swimming pool
