Wernicke’s area

A

A region of the brain concerned with the comprehension of language, located in the cortex of the dominant temporal lobe. Damage causes Wernicke’s aphasia characterized by superficially fluent grammatical speech but an inability to use or understand more than the most basic nouns or verbes.

Velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI)

A

The inability to separate the nasal cavity from the oral cavity during the speech. The result is abnormal resonance and the produstion of distracting noises during speech. Distortion of consonants and vowel sounds.

Vocal Cords

A

Muscularized folds of micous membrane that extended from larynx wall. The folds are enxlosed in elastic vocal ligament and muscle that controls the tension and rate of vibration of the cords as air passes through them.

Voice Disorder

A

Any deviation in pitch, intensity, quality or other basic vocal attribute which consistently interferes with communication, draws anfavorable attention, advesely affects the speaker or the listener or is inappropriate to the age, sex, culture, class. It can bo organic or functional.

Yawn-sigh Approach

A

Technique used in stuttering and voice therapies to aid in eliminating hard glottal contacts and to encourage greater airflow. The client is instructed to yawn to obtain longer inspiration, exhale with a light phonation at first an then phonating words.
