Generic term referring to the action of material penetrating the larynx and entering the airway below the true vocal folds. May occur:
- before the swallowing reflex is triggered when airway has not elevated or closed
- during swallowing if the laryngeal velves are not functioning adequately
- after the swallow when the larynx lowers and opens fo inhalation
