Inflammatory – Pelvic Inflammatory Disease What’s PID?
A
- common infection of the reproductive tract
Includes:
Cervicitis - Infection of the cervix
Endometritis - uterus,
Salphingitis - fallopian tubes - Oophoritis - ovaries
- Acute or chronic

Signs & symptoms of acute PID? (5)
A
- Bilateral lower abdominal pain, radiating to the legs (1st indication) -> sudden & severe or gradually increasing
- Foul smelling vaginal discharge, purulent discharge at cervix
- Dysuria (pain when peeing)
- Fever (T > 38 deg), malaise, anorexia, nausea, headache
- Tenderness during pelvic exams

Nursing care for PID? (3)
A
- Heat application to abdominal area if ordered: to improve circulation and provide comfort
*Administer analgesics for pain relief - Aggressive broad spectrum antibiotic therapy: Cefoxitin, Doxycycline

Downward displacement of the uterus into the vagina

Symptoms of uterine prolapse? (2)
A
- pressure and urinary problems (incontinence or retention) from displacement of bladder
- Aggravated when a woman coughs, lifts a heavy object, or stands for a long time
- Normal activities, even walking up stairs, may aggravate symptoms.

Nursing Management for uterine prolapse? (2)
A
- Conservative:
Lifestyle changes, pessaries, and pelvic floor muscle training -> symptomatic improvement. - Surgical: Uterus is sutured back into place and repaired to strengthen and tighten
the muscle bands.
