VYGOTSKY- social cultural perspective Flashcards
What was Vygotsky’s ideas on development
He emphasized social and cultural contexts and that psychological tools are developed through social and cultural interactions. He veiwed language as very important and challenged Piaget’s views on egocentrism by saying that children talk to themselves to help them solve and process. As children gain more experience they can develop private speech (internalized speech to direct and process their ideas )
He also proposed different groups such as maths and language have different zones and a child of the same age might be further along in development at particular zones - individual differences
Main development based on social interaction
how did he argue children’s learning takes place
Within zone of proximal development- Lower zone is actual development reflecting what learner can do on their own and the upper zone is potential level so what they cannot yet do everything in between is proximal.
What other factors did he say contributed to the ability to solve a task?
Environmental factors e.g. helped by others, wording of questions, facial expressions of the experimenter, or guidance such as breaking down the task into manageable sub tasks.
What was his views on pretend play
Showed children advancing/ testing new skills. It is rule based showing social and cultural context to their learning.
