Q

Concrete operations stage key points

A
7-11 years
Progress away from egocentrism to decentration(more flexible thinking), and reversiility (objects can change back to original state), and thus can solve conservation tasks.
They can also seriate mentally (group objects)/ transitive thinking- objects still being necessary (cannot do the tasks with just a verbal explanation)
Between ages 7-10 they can show class inclusion e.g. correctly sort flowers into major class and subclass.

Q

Issues with PIAGET’S concrete operational stage

A

Culture and schooling affects childs performance on many of his tasks. E.G. Hausa a village in Nigeria rarely got sent to school cannot do conservation tasks until the age of 11. Another example underprivileged children in Brazil receive little schooling and work as street vendors so perform poorly on class inclusion but when context is around street vending their performance improves. Time in school- research shown those who have been in education for longer perform better on transitive thinking
