Vygotsky Flashcards
What did Vygotsky focus on the importance of ?
- Focused on the importance of doing
- Focused on the importance of a caregiver to act as a more knowledgable other so child can improve.
What is the zone of proximal development ?
Zone of proximal development is just beyond what a child knows
How can one reach the zone of proximal development ?
Through scaffolding or support from a more knowledgeable other a child can reach this.
Importance of interaction for things other than language development ?
- Conversation skills and pragmatics learnt through interaction with adults
Evidence of pragmatical knowledge gain through interaction ?
Schemas are evidence for interaction as they have learnt what that is though their environment
Proof of theory ?
- CDS
- Case Study Jim
Dismissal of theory ?
Fis Phenomenon
- Effectiveness of CDS - CDS can be seen as unnecessary if a child is not ready to produce grammatically correct or complete utterances. Waste of time.
- Cultures such as Papa New Guinea
Fis Phenomenon
A child says “ This is my fis “
Adult replies “ Your fis”
To which child replies “ No, my sis “
Study shows that CDS could been seen as unnecessary and useless due to the lack of phonological development the child has. Instead, caregivers should provide a standard model of speech for a child to copy.
When was the Fis Phenomenon
( study conducted in 1960 )
