Piaget Flashcards
1
Q
What did Jean Piaget suggest ?
A
- Language cant’t be taught before they’re ready. Children’s language will not develop until particular stages of cognitive development.
- use environment and social interactions to shape language
2
Q
What did Jean Piaget focus on ?
A
Focused on the cognitive development of a child and suggested that at the core of a child’s development of understanding is the learning that a child undertakes.
3
Q
What are the stages of cognitive development ?
A
Sensorimotor stage
Pre- Operational stage
Concrete Operational Stage
Formal Operational Stage
4
Q
What is cognitive development ?
A
a child’s development of learning and understanding.
5
Q
When is a child ready to learn the language’s irregularities and linguistic methods ?
A
when a child is cognitively ready
6
Q
Proof of Cognitive theory/approach ?
A
- stages that children progress through when acquiring language are widely considered to be universal
e.g. certain aspects of grammar like morphemes consistently develop in the same order across all children. It would, therefore, that cognitive ability is in some way related to a child’s capacity to understand. - younger children explore simple concepts in early speech and only progress to more complex concept as their cognitive abilities develop, which occurs when they are older
7
Q
Criticisms/ Challenges of cognitive approach/theory ?
A
- Vygotsky argues that some tasks are too difficult for children to perform on their own and must, therefore need the support of older, more knowledgeable other
- In this case, children would never progress in their use of angle because there wouldn’t;t be any more advanced speakers from which to learn. Therefore, other factors must be behind language acquisition
