what defines a diphtong
A
sound formed by the combination of two vowels in a single syllable. sound begins as one vowel and moves into another. diphtong are always long.

a vowel with a single perceived auditory quality

what is a schwa and where is it found
A
it is only found in unstressed syllables. most vowels in AUSE unstressed syllables become a Schwa. it is very variable and often can be perceived as other vowels
