How can Media influence voting behaviour?
It is portrayed everywhere
An example of the media influencing voters
In the run up to the 2019 election, Andrew Neil interviewed all major party leaders except Boris Johnson, as his team were worried about how he would come across.
How does this influence votes?
People may have been put off of the Tory party due to a ‘weak’ leader.
Rebuttal/example against media being influential
In the 2019 election, only 20% of voters said their vote was influenced by what is shown in the media.
How can age influence voting behaviour?
Older people are not as embracing of change as younger people, therefore older people usually vote tory.
An example of this?
An average of 56% of under 40s suppoerted the Labour party in 2019 compared to only 25% who voted Tory.
Another example of this?
Over 60% of under 50s voted to remain in the Brexit Referendum.
What does this show?
Younger people are incluned to vote for more left wing parties.
How does social class affect votes?
Upper class and upper middle tend to vote tory due to them wanting th keep their money and power.
An example of this?
In 1974 less than 30% of C2DE supported Tories.
Why is it argued Social class doesn’t influence voting behaviour?
Due to consitutional change
Evidence to show this?
In the 2014 election, people earning £30,000 and over in Scotland were 50:50 between yes and no in the Scottish Independence referendum.
