What is the United Nations?
In the aftermath of WWII, countries around the world agreed that an international institution was necessary to maintain global peace.
How is the US influential in the UN?
It is it’s largest contributor (22% of the whole budget in 2018) and the US help to resolve multiple challenges in the UN
What can be used by the US to influence the UN?
Vetoes
What did Trump indicate he would use his veto for in 2020?
If the Security Council were to suspend all military operations due to Covid.
Why does the US not alweays get what it wants in the UN?
All 5 permenant members in the UN Security Council must agree to their actions and could use their veto.
An example for this?
US Led efforts to impose UN sanctions against Syria in 2017 failed due to China and Russia using their vetoes.
What percentage of global military spending in 2019 did the US account for?
38% (732 billion)
Why is the US military not completely invincible?
They got bogged down in Afghanistan and Iraq dealing with terrorists.
What is NATO?
A security alliance of 28 countries from North America and Europe, designed to protect these countries from Communist Russia.
What has the USA been?
A dominant member of Nato since it was created.
An example of NATO defending USA?
The attacks of 9/11 on New York and Washington DC, which resulted in all NATO countries supporting the USA in their invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.
When have the USA and NATO been helpless?
Due to Putin authorising military action in Georgia, Ukraine and Syria, NATO and the US have been unable to stop him.
Why?
Their leaders do not wish to engage in military conflict in a far off country and Putin knows this.
