Who can vote in elections in the USA?
Most 18 year olds, but voting age is set by States.
What kind of elections can voters vote in?
Presidential elections, Congressional elections, State Congress elections etc.
What was the voter turnout in the 2016 presidential election?
55.7% (almost 137,000,000 votes being cast)
How often do Presidential elections take place?
Every 4 years.
Which groups are not allowed to vote in elections?
Non-citizens, for example many hispanic immigrants, criminals etc…
Which states allow felons to vote?
Maine and Vermont
What could be a reason for the drop in voting turnout in the 2018 mid-term elections?
Specific races not being allowed to vote i.e hispanics.
Who can stand as a candidate in a Federal election?
Any US citizen that meets the relevant age and citizinship restrictions.
Example of US citizens standing as a candidate?
Donald Trump, Joe Biden ans Jo Jorgensen in 2020 when running for the White House.
What do citizens need access to to be able to stand as a candidate?
Considerable sums of money.
What was spent in total by all candidates seeking election to Congress?
Over $4 billion in 2016.
What are some other barriers to standing as a candidate?
Being a woman, POC.
What are the two main parties in which Americans can join to influence Government?
Democrats and Republicans.
What were the membership numbers in 2020 for the main parties?
Democrats = 45.7 million and Republicans = 33.2 million.
What other smaller parties can people join?
Libertarians, Greens…
