Voluntary movement Flashcards
Explain the first step of voluntary movement
Sensory stimuli is detected by sensory receptors (E.g, a hand comes into contact with cold water, or the retina detects a stimuli such as a remote the person wants to use)
Explain the second step of voluntary movement
An Afferent neural impulse is transmitted via afferent pathways in the SNS to the spinal cord & then the brain (E.g the cold sensation is sent to the brain or presence of the remote is sent to the brain)
Explain the third step of voluntary movement
The brain then processes the sensory information and coordinates & initiates a conscious motor response
Explain the fourth step of voluntary movement
The Motor/Efferent neural impulse is transmitted via efferent pathways in the spinal cord, then to the SNS located in the PNS & to the skeletal muscles
Explain the fifth step of voluntary movement
The skeletal muscles then carry out the conscious motor response to the sensory stimuli
What are key terms you should use in a question regarding voluntary movement?
- Sensory receptors & stimuli
- Sensory/afferent neurons
- Brain, CNS, spinal cord
- Motor/efferent neurons, PNS
- Skeletal muscles
- SNS & Voluntary response
