Gut-brain axis Flashcards
Define gut microbiota
All microorganisms that live in the gut, unique to the person. They digest food to provide energy
What does gut microbiota also involved in producing?
Some neurotransmitters & influences their concertation levels in the brain
Define gut-brain axis (GBA)
a new area of research that looks at the bidirectional connection through the ENS & CNS (gut & brain)
Define the Enteric Nervous system
A network of nerves in the gut; a subdivision of ANS & controls the digestive system
What is the Vagus nerve’s purpose?
To connect the brain and gut and allow for bidirectional communication
How does GBA impact psychological processes?
Studies show experiencing stress can negatively impact the diversity and composition of an individuals gut microbiota & unhealthy gut microbiota is linked to higher levels of stress
WHAT SHOULD YOU ALWAYS STATE WHEN TALKING ABOUT GBA?
EMERGING RESEARCH SUGGESTS N POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS BC ITS EVOLVING RESEARCH
