Define Ethical Leadership?
Combines ethical decision-making and ethical behavior and occurs in both an individual and organization context.
Define Ethics?
Its behavior based on adopted attitudes and beliefs of what is right and wrong or Values and judgments about good and evil, and the study of how you judge those behaviors. Is a set of standards of conduct that guide decision and action based on duties derived from core values.
What are Values?
They are the core beliefs you hold regarding what is right and fair in terms of our actions and our interactions with others.
Define Morals
They are values that you attribute to a system of beliefs that help us define right and wrong, good vs bad.
Dr. Toner’s Ethical Principles-
Three O’s (owing, ordering, and oughting)
State that you must know who and what you owe, display proper ordering by having moral structuring and ethical priorities, and understand what Airmen should do or ought to do. Three P’s ( Principles, purpose, people) Explain the NCOs must put principle (truth telling and honor) first; purpose (mission accomplishment and duty) second; and people (fellow citizens, Airmen, Soldiers) Third. Three R’s (Rules, results, realities) Explain that rules give us ethical guidance, results are the outcomes, the bottom line, and the consequences of following or not following those rules, and realities, which recognize the importance of the situation, circumstances, or realities. Three D’s (Discern, Declare, Do) State that you must try to Discern the truth, at appropriate times, you declare the truth as you have discerned it, and then you do what you have discerned and declared.
Define Ethical Relativism
Making decision based on personal values rather than on military rules, regulations, and codes of conduct.
What is Loyalty Syndrome?
Making decisions based on respect and loyalty to an individual, unit, or organizations rather than on military rules, regulations, and codes of conduct.
What is Worry Over Image?
Making decisions base on how the decision will impact one’s reputation among peers, subordinates, supervisors, community rather than on military rules, regulations, and codes of conduct.
What is Drive for Success
Making decisions based on “win at all cost” attitude rather than on military rules, regulations, and codes of conduct.
What are Dr. Toner’s Six Tests?

Define The Shame Test
- If your actions were publicized, would you be embarrassed, discredited, or humiliated?
Define The Community Test
Besides your family, would you want your peers, neighbors, or friends to know?
Define The legal test
Could you face legal action? Are you willing to face legal action?
Define The Situation Test
Could you justify your action because of peculiar, special or extraordinary circumstances?
Define The Consequences Test
Will the end justify the means?
