What is Heritage?
Something transmitted by or acquired from a predecessor.
Who was William Ivy Baldwin?
A stunt balloonist, along with his wife, constructed the Army’s only available balloon at the beginning of the Spanish American War. Baldwin was a civilian aeronaut who was recruited by the Army as a flight instructor. He enlisted in 1897 and was tasked to ready the balloon for Signal Corps service, being the only experienced crew member Baldwin made the first ascension on 30 June 1898, to observe the Spanish Fleet in Santiago harbor.
What happened on 1 August 1907?
The U.S. Army Signal Corps established a small Aeronautical Division to take charge of all matters pertaining to military ballooning, air machines, and all Kindred subjects.
Who was Corporal Frank Scott?
Became the first enlisted fatality of an aircraft accident in 1912. Scott AFB is named after him and the only facility named after an enlisted man.
The Year 1916 Marked what event in history?
The first military unit of the US Army devoted exclusively to aviation was the 1st Aero Squadron. This squadron, designated today as the 1st Reconnaissance Squadron, has remained continually active since its creation.
Who was Ruth Law?
Is considered one of the finest pilots of her time. She held numerous flying records and was also considered one of the bravest American Pilots.
In 1917 the US army asked her to wear the US Army Uniform to raise money for the war effort, which is how she became the first female pilot allowed to wear the US Army uniform.
Who is Walter Beech?
By the time World War I was over, even enlisted pilots would wear wings above the left breast pocket. One of the enlisted pilots during this era was a staff sergeant name Walter Beech. He is known today as Walter Beech of Beechcraft Corporation.
Who is Private Frederick Libby?
He was the first American ace. Libby was first American to shoot down five enemy airplanes, but since he was enlisted, those were not recorded, only the 14 kills he made later as an officer are in the books.
Who is Corporal Eugene Bullard?
Is one of the most interesting individuals for the World War I Era. He flew mission with the French Air Service in 1917. He was the established as the first Black pilot/fighter pilot.
Who is Sergeant Archibald Mathies?
Was a ball turret gunner in 1944. He attempted to save the life of his pilot by refusing to bail out of the aircraft when he had the opportunity while trying unsuccessfully to land the aircraft.
Who is Jack Middaugh?
Founder of the “Sad Sacks”- The group was torpedoed on their way to the war, lost their airplanes, and were broken up before 13 survivors ended up in the same place to finally start their active involvement in the war.
Describe the National Security Act of 1947?
Became law on 26 July. It created the Department of the Air Force headed by a secretary of the Air Force.
Who is CMSgt Wayne Fisk?
He was involved in the Son Tay Prison Camp raid and the Mayaguez crew rescue during his four tours in Vietnam as a Pararescueman, became the first director of the Air Force Enlisted Heritage Hall.
Who is Chief Master Sergeant Richard Etchberger?
He took care of his people. The Chief was killed after he held North Vietnamese sappers at bay for six hours with a single M-16 rifle and loaded his troops and himself aboard a CIA helicopter. As the chopper was pulling away several armor-piercing rounds penetrated the helicopter wounded the chief eventually killing him. Was originally put in for the Medal of Honor but was downgraded due to the mission being Classified Secret. But on 21 September, 2010 the Air Force cross which he received was upgraded to the Medal of Honor and presented to his three children by President Barack Obama.
