Mintonette
Forearm pass or bump: (2)
Used when receiving a serve or a volley. Often the first touch of the ball.
Positioning Stance (forearm pass)
Slightly bent knees with arms extended at 30° or 40° angle
Formation of hands: (forearm pass)
On top of one another with thumbs together forming a flat platform with forearms
Contact with ball (forearm pass)
Is above wrist. (if it contacts the wrist or hands it will bounce off unpredictably)
For additional height or distance: (forearm pass)
Push slightly upwards with your legs
In order to have greater control over your pass… (forearm pass)
Avoid swinging your arms
Overhead pass or set:
Often the second touch of the ball used to prepare for a spike or attacking hit
Stance: (overhead pass)
Feet are staggered and knees are bent comfortably
Hand Formation: (overhead pass)
Lift your hands and form a shape similar to the volleyball with thumbs pointed at your eyes.
Contact with ball (overhead pass)
Near forehead level with your finger pads
To push the ball high in the air… (overhead pass)
Extend your arms and legs
Spike:
The action of jumping into the air and hitting the ball downwards into your opponent’s side of the court
How to spike:
- Jump by swinging both arms forward and upwards while pushing explosively with both legs to lift your body into the air.
- Pull your right elbow back and bend it to about 90° with your hand relaxed but opened and curved to the shape of the ball
- Quickly move your elbow forward forcing your hand to “snap” forward as you make contact with the ball.
Underhand serve:
A good beginning serve. It can be very accurate and consistent. It does not provide a lot of power, so it is easier for the opponent to return.
Position (underhand serve)
Non-dominant hand holds the ball in front of the body while stepping in opposition.
How to underhand serve
- Use a pendulum motion to swing the other arm towards the ball.
- Holding arm rotates slightly towards the swinging arm so that you can contact the ball with the heel of your hand.
- You should contact the ball directly out of your hand
How to win a game
The first team to reach 25 points with a winning margin of at least two points.
How to win a match
A team has to win three out of five games to win the match
Rally scoring
If the serving team wins a rally, it scores a point and continues to serve; if the receiving team wins a rally, it scores a point and it must serve next .
A team is awarded a point if they successfully ground the ball on the opponent’s court or if the other team commits a fault.
Faults (5)
- An individual player hits the ball more than once consecutively
- A player makes contact with the net
- A team hits the volleyball more than 3 times without getting it over the net
- A team hits the ball out of bounds, against the wall, or off of the ceiling
- A player catches, lifts, carries or contacts the ball with an open palm below the waist.
Keep in mind (9)
- A ball that hits a boundary line is considered in bounds
- A block does not count as a hit
- The serving player must start behind the end line.
- Defenders from the receiving team cannot block or spike the serve
- The ideal sequence of hits for a team is “bump, set, spike”
- A player can travel outside of the court in order to play the ball
- Announce the score before each serve to avoid confusion
- An official game consists of 6 players on the court for each team
- Players rotate positions each time they gain possession of the serve
