Characteristics of a Lifeguard (5)

Look and be prepared to respond appropriately I any situation
Reliable:
Get to work on time, accepts assignments willingly, be committed to your work and respond to all incidents quickly and effectively
Courteous and Consistent
Be polite and enforce the rules firmly and equally for everyone
Professional
You are a leader. Act responsibly obey all facility rules and lead others by your example.
Distressed Swimmer
Cramping or may have minor injury and need assistance
This swimmer can speak
May need a reach and assist from the deck with a rescue tube or ring buoy
May need to enter water and perform a tow and assist
Active Victim
Person is actively moving in water, is conscious but not focused
Struggling to stay above water, scared, and trying to survive
Need to rescue by use of rear rescue with the rescue tube
Passive Victim
Person is not moving, may be face up or down,+ unconscious
Use rear rescue or cross chest carry, both with a rescue tube
Submerged victim
Person found on bottom of pool or another area of water.
Is unconscious
Types of surface dives
Feet first
Head first
Ease in entry
Used to rescue a victim with a spinal injury or if you suspect a spinal injury. (911 should be called) Minimal splash, quiet water
Compact entry
Done in shallow or murky water
Stride entry
Scissor kick or whip kick. The object is to keep your head above the water and eyes on the victim
Modified front crawl
Flutter kick is used
Modified breast stroke
Whip kick is used
Sidestroke
Scissor kick is used
Kicks and arm motions
Scissor, whip, egg beater, flutter
A sculling technique or figure eight (arm motions)
Staying vertical
Things to follow and to take into consideration when rescuing
Follow the Standard of Care (don’t want to be found negligent)
Follow Emergency Action Plan (EAP)- Lifeguards are expected to respond quickly and effectively to all emergency situations
Follow the FIND model, F- figure out problem, I- identify solutions N- name the pros and cons of each situation D- decide what is best
Lifeguard job responsibilities (6)
Always check your surrounding area
Make sure a phone is available and in working order
Check and stock your first aid kit
Check your chemical levels
Stay current with all certifications (CPR, First Aid, AED, and LGT)
While on duty- never take your eyes off of the water
