Volcanoes Flashcards
Describe the distribution of volcanoes around the globe
Found at destructive and constructive plate boundaries, linear distribution
What is a volcano?
A mountain or hill from which lava, molten rock, hot vapour and ash erupt from the earths crust
Why do they erupt?
Pressure in the magma chamber gets too much and the gases cannot escape
Explain the differences between composite (cone) volcanoes and shield volcanoes
shield volcanoes
erupt for a long period of time, wide flow, runny lava (basaltic rock)
whereas
composite volcanoes have violent eruptions, found at only destructive boundaries and have viscous lava
Name the characteristics of a volcano
magma chamber, fumarble, parasitic cone, main vent, crust and crater
Describe the primary effects of a volcanic eruption ( use case study!!!!)
2/3 of the island covered in ash, floods as valleys were blocked with ash, farmland destroyed, forest fires, population evacuated,19 dead, schools and hospitals demolished
How are volcanoes monitored?
Montserrat is monitored by seismometers, placed around the volcano - measures movement of the ground. Also the gases let off by a volcano are tested- higher the sulphur content the closer the eruption
Why are volcanoes monitored?
so that we can predict the next eruption and save economy, lives and the environment
secondary effects
secondary - less tourism, harsh living condition, transport link damaged, population left island
How is a super volcano different from a regular volcano?
Super volcanoes cover 100 miles or more, 1 million times more powerful than atomic bomb
Describe the local, national and global impacts of an eruption
super volcano - globe at risk
Yellowstone - create islands, lung diseases, animal extinction, kills plants
