Coasts Flashcards
Define what a wave is
A wave is a body of water moving towards a coastline at a higher than average level
What is backwash?
Wave that is always at a right angle to the sea
What is swash?
Wave that goes up the beach at the angle of the prevailing wind
What is the fetch?
The distance the wind travels
What is a constructive wave?
Created in calm weather condition
Stronger swash than backwash
Long wavelength and low height
What is a destructive wave?
Created in stormy weather
Stronger backwash than swash
High wavelength and high in height
What is mechanical weathering?
The breakdown of rock without changing its chemical composition - freeze thaw
What is chemical weathering?
The brealdown of rocks by changing its chemical composition - Carbonation weathering
Name the 5 steps of how freeze thaw happens
1) Temperature altenernates above and below 0
2) Water gets into cracks in rock
3) Water freezes and expands, putting pressure on rock
4) Water thaws and contracts, releasing pressure
5) Repetition of this = cracks are widen and rocks break
What is weathering?
Breakdown of rocks where they are - not where they are carried away, that is erosion
