Stucture of the earth Flashcards
What is the order of the earths structure?
Inner core, outer core, mantle, crust
What are the differences between oceanic and continental crusts?
oceanic crusts are denser than continental crusts
Why do tectonic plates move?
They move because of convection currents, which are formed by hot fluids want to move somewhere cold
What is the evidence that the continents have drifted about the planet?
Fossils of animals have been found around the globe where they shouldn’t be
Name the natural features of a destructive plate boundary
Ocean trenches, fold mountains
What happens at a destructive plate boundary?
the oceanic crust goes beneath the continental crust
What happens at a constructive boundary?
Two plates move apart, leaving a gap in the middle for magma to escape
What is a conservative or slip boundary?
Where two plates slide past each other
Not colliding
No volcanos found here
Just earthquakes
What is a collision boundary?
Two plates of similar density move together, causes material between them to buckle up and form a fold mountain
